…These were the words of Lindy Cameron as she addressed the audience at a Chatham House Cyber Conference this week. She emphasised that these types of attack posed a threat to everyone from major companies, to local councils and schools.

Do you have an IT-related question that needs answering? Ask away.

Ms Cameron explained that the pandemic continued to act as a real motivator for cyber crime activity in that “Malicious actors continue to try and access Covid related information, whether that is data on new variants or vaccine procurement plan.”

She added that some groups also sought to use this information to undermine public trust in government responses to the pandemic, and that criminals are now regularly using Covid-themed attacks as a way of scamming.

Now for anyone who follows ransomware trends, the topics covered in Ms Cameron’s speech probably don’t come as a huge surprise, but presented in a public forum like in today’s article, it acts as a stark reminder to all of us of just what a real threat ransomware is.

One particularly worrying thing, and something that stood out to us was her warning that not enough organisations were prepared for the threat or had tested their cyber defences. This is such an important thing to do, because if you don’t have a good idea of how resilient you are should the worst happen, you really are left in the dark.

This is precisely what we did for Digital Health and Care Wales recently. You can read that case study here, and if you’d like to know more about the latest trends in ransomware and what to watch out for, you can download our ransomware e-Book below.

“Net Consulting’s understanding of our requirement was evident through a superb bid and they showcased exactly the right approach. Clearly their Public Sector experience was transferable in terms of this engagement. Their cybersecurity expertise is very strong across the team, right from knowledgeable, technical and engaging leaders, through to their team of Floodlight SOC analysts. Net Consulting were under a very tight deadline, given the fact we needed to complete this piece of work within the financial year. They performed at a significant pace, were very reactive and agile, and never once let their high level of standards slip."
